Create Child Asset

A child asset is created from the parent asset record, so can only be created after the parent asset is created.

When you add a child asset to the hierarchy, only child asset types available for the parent asset type are presented for selection. Each child asset can have one of the following characteristics:
  • In: The child asset can only be located within the parent asset.
  • At: The child asset has the exact same location as the parent asset.
  • None: The location of the child asset is independent of the parent asset.
Note: A recommended best practice is to assign only AT child assets to a parent asset that is a point asset.

To create a Child Asset:

  1. Click the Start Spatial Edits button and select the layer you want to work with. This will be the layer of the parent asset. Click Start Spatial Edits.
  2. Click the Edit Asset button .
  3. Select the parent asset that you want to add a child asset to. You can select it directly from the map if you know its location, from a Search or from a selection you make on the map.
    • If selecting from the map, click the Show Attributes button from the radial context menu.
    • If selecting from Search results, or a selection from the map, click the Show Details button beside the parent asset that you will add child assets to.
  4. The Asset details dialog opens.

  5. Right-click the parent asset in the hierarchical list view on the left side of the dialog, then select Add.

  6. The Select Child Asset Type dialog opens. Click the radio button for the associated child asset type and then click Select.

The dialog closes and the Attributes tab for the child asset is displayed.

  7. Enter the attributes of the child asset. Some fields may be mandatory, depending on the configuration defined by the organization.
  8. Click Save. The child asset is created and appears below the parent asset in the hierarchy.

Additional child assets can be added to the hierarchy by following the steps outlined above.

  9. Click the parent asset in the hierarchy and then click the Locations tab.

  10. Click the Show locations on dropdown and select a network element where the asset is located. Note the Start and End position of the parent asset.
  11. Click the child asset in the hierarchy and note its Start and End position. For a child asset that is IN, these are the same as the parent asset.
